A pop music veteran that needs no introduction, Lionel Richie has been a musical force to be with reckoned with for over 50 decades! Now, the superstar comes to Sugar Land as part of his Hello Tour, which will feature many of the legendary pop and R&B singer's biggest hits. Lionel Richie grew up on the campus of the Tuskegee Institute, where most of his family had worked for two generations prior. While attending college there, Richie joined the Commodores, who went on to become the most successful act on the Motown label during the latter half of the '70s. Richie served as a saxophonist, sometime vocalist, and songwriter, penning ballads like "Easy," "Three Times a Lady," and "Still". Richie’s wide-ranging musical talents led to collaboration with other artists, including country musician Kenny Rogers and pop-soul singer Diana Ross. Such musical excursions accelerated Richie’s rapid rise in popularity and ultimately precipitated his split from the Commodores.
Release of the album Lionel Richie in 1982 marked the start of Richie’s solo career. The next several years were a whirlwind, with the release of numerous number one hits—including “All Night Long (All Night)” (1983), “Hello” (1984), and “Say You, Say Me” (1985)—and two more albums: Can’t Slow Down (1983) and Dancing on the Ceiling (1986). In 1985 Richie wrote “We Are the World” with pop icon Michael Jackson to raise money for African famine relief; the song generated some $50 million in donations and received a Grammy for song of the year.
Over the course of his musical career, Richie has sold over 90 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has won four Grammy Awards and one Golden Globe award. In 2016, Richie received the Songwriters Hall of Fame's highest honor, the Johnny Mercer Award.
